John's community activities demonstrate his contributions to civic life. John has set a fine example of participation in community activities in many different areas for many years. He has continued to contribute his time and experience to making the community a better place to live. He has a broad spectrum of contributions over the past 4 decades, and it is an appropriate time that he be recognized for his civic life. John lives in the Virginia Run community in Centreville with his wife Barbara. He is a retired colonel who served in the United States Air Force. He is retired from the federal government, and currently works as an aviation consultant in litigation matters. He received his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and his masters degree from USC. John is currently the co-chair of the Joint Land Use Committee of Sully District Council and the West Fairfax County Citizens Association. He has been active in land use committees and task forces dating back to the Centreville Core Study in 1982. He served on the Fairfax County Planning Commission as the Sully District representative for 8 years, from 2007 to 2015, handling land use applications in the Sully District. He served on several Planning Commission committees, including the Housing Committee and Capital Improvement Program (CIP) committee. He served on the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority from 2004 to 2007. He was Celebrate Fairfax Sully District Volunteer of the Year in 2007 and recognized as a Lord Fairfax in 1987, again recognizing volunteer service. He has been active in the Virginia Run Community Association, served as Vice President from 1991-1993 and also on its Board of Trustees. He has served as an active member of the Centreville United Methodist Church, and chaired its Trustees, Long Range Planning, Finance and Building committees, as well as its Caregivers Resource Group, providing support and resources to caregivers. He was active in coaching youth sports and high school lacrosse from 1991 to 2008 at Centreville and Westfield high schools, and with both Chantilly Youth Association and Southwestern Youth Association. He has been active in the West Fairfax County Citizens Association for many years, was one of the founders in 1980, serving on the Land Use Committee from 1983-1994, and was its president from 1986 to 1988. |
Ms. Lettice has been a committed board member and volunteer for a number of organizations, especially here in Fairfax County. Since 2020, Paula has served as the President of the Board of Directors for Mount Vernon at Home, a local organization that serves residents aged 55 and over who are choosing to remain in their homes in Mount Vernon as they age and is a part of a national movement of senior Villages. During the pandemic, Ms. Lettice has been a true leader for the organization, helping shift their fundraising efforts to virtual events, while still utilizing local businesses. She also was a driving force to find their most recent Executive Director. Prior to her work with Mount Vernon at Home, Ms. Lettice has been a tireless advocate and volunteer for Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services. She served on the Board of Directors between 2002 and 2004, returning to serve between 2008 and 2014. During her time on the Board, she also served as the Treasurer where she instituted trend analysis and projections as part of the financial proces and led the decision process on refinancing commercial bank loans. Ms. Lettice's long-term service to a number of organizations in Fairfax County makes her a candidate worthy of the Fairfax County Citizen of the Year Award. Ms. Lettice purchased her home and moved to Fairfax County in late 1988 with 2 sons, and has been an active resident of the Southwood community ever since. From 1995 until 1998, she served as President of the Southwood Civic Association in Mount Vernon, Virginia, where her professional background in budgeting and financial management were key to supporting the association. While she has been an active volunteer and leader for a number of organizations, including the local chapter for the American Association of University Women, her biggest contributions have been for The Campagna Center, Mount Vernon at Home, and Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services. During her tenure volunteering for The Campagna Center, Ms. Lettice served as a Board member and Committee Chair, helping fundraise to benefit the organization. The mission of The Campagna Center is to deliver exceptional educational and social development programs for children, teens, and adults. They offer early childhood education, health and nutrition awareness, before- and after-school programs, tutoring and mentoring, career and college readiness planning, and classes for English language learners. A member of Mount Vernon at Home, Ms. Lettice joined the Board in 2018. In 2020, Ms. Lettice stepped into the role as President to support the organization's needs as the pandemic changed much for the organization and its members. She not only made masks for a number of members, but recruited a number of other volunteers to help make masks. Reliant on membership dues and fundraising, Ms. Lettice led the effort to turn their annual fundraising gala into a hybrid event, enlisting volunteers to deliver meals made by Cedar Knoll to be enjoyed during a virtual entertainment program. On top of all of that, Ms. Lettice has been a steadfast and committed supporter of Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services since 2002. As a Board officer and member of the Strategic Planning Committee, she was instrumental in the adoption of the 2011 five-year strategic plan. In her role as Board Treasurer, she advanced the financial reporting of the agency and created a strong foundation for its long-term financial sustainability. She has always supported GSH and its mission through ongoing volunteerism, event planning, and philanthropy. She continues to broaden awareness of the organization's affordable housing mission and focuses her many volunteer efforts to improving the lives of those who are less fortunate.
